In November 2023, Buckley experienced his first feline idiopathic cystitis crisis. We discussed options with his vet and decided since Buckley did not have any urinary crystals or blockages, we would add daily supplements and more water to help him have a healthy bladder and urinary tract.
Buckley is one picky eater. He only likes chicken. He only likes hard food. He will not eat soft food. He will have chicken broth, thank goodness! We tried giving him broth twice a day but he wound’t eat the broth in the evening so he gets broth and supplements once day. Since one of the liquid supplements is suppose to be given twice a day, we use Vet’s Best Urinary Tract Support as a secondary supplement. Buckley LOVES these chews. They are hard so we break them up into bite sized bits and Buckley gobbles them up:

The broth we used is talked about under “Cat Food and Accessories” so check that section out for food questions. We use three different supplements because they all do different things. D-mannose is naturally found in cranberries and is an anti-inflammatory. It also helps bacteria from sticking to the wall of the bladder and urethra.

Cornsilk promotes urine production, which helps flush out toxins and prevents bacteria build-up. It also smooths inflammation and reduces discomfort.

The main ingredient in the Urinary Gold and Vet’s Best treat is marshmallow root, which kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and strengthens the lining of the bladder.

If Buckley is in a crisis, the vet prescribed him Metacam, which is like strong Advil for humans. Metacam helps with pain management and is an inflammatory.
Stress management is huge with feline idiopathic cystitis so check out our other page titled “Stress” for tips.
Buckley was diagnosed with feline idiopathic cystitis in November of 2023. We have found giving him broth with supplements (for a list of supplements, see additional page) works well for him.
Thought we wished Tender and True offered broth, we found another ethical sourced company that has raw chicken broth. No fillers, grain free, and small farmed owned:

We use mason jars to put his broth in but didn’t care for the lids. These lids are a lifesaver. Easy to use and just wash and re-use:
